On October 5th, The Belisha Foundation proudly hosted its first-ever soccer tournament, bringing together six teams (four boys’ and two girls’) for a spirited day of competition, community, and celebration. The event, held in honor of the foundation’s mission, was a resounding success, with trophies and medals awarded to the winning boys’ and girls’ teams, alongside recognition for the tournament’s best players and top scorers in each category.

In addition to the thrilling soccer matches, the tournament featured a range of refreshments for sale, including homemade Tella, Sambusa, and Biscuits, generously prepared by dedicated mothers from the community. Special thanks go out to these incredible moms for their tireless efforts in making the event not only enjoyable but memorable for all. The sales of these goods, combined with donations, raised an impressive $3,364—$1,505 from donations and $1,859 from sales.
The short but meaningful award ceremony was led by Dr. Solomon Kidanu, Director of Programs at The Belisha Foundation. Founder and CEO Abebe Seifu also delivered heartfelt remarks, emphasizing the importance of this event in fostering community and supporting the foundation’s mission. He spoke of the deep connection his late wife, Belisha, had with children, making this youth-centered event a fitting tribute to her legacy. He also reminded the attendees of the foundation’s ongoing goals and future tasks, both here in the USA and in Ethiopia.
The event concluded with the CEO expressing his gratitude to the parents who made the tournament a reality, as well as to the young participants who showed their talent and enthusiasm on and off the field. It was truly a day that embodied the spirit of The Belisha Foundation—uniting the community for a cause close to all our hearts.
